This is what I experienced before reading the Choose Life! booklet. I felt confused, lost and scared. Reading the Choose Life! booklet made me feel like I was talking to a friend. I felt so free and open. Every country in the world is affected by HIV and AIDS. Everyone wants to be free from this disease because we all know how dangerous it is. Reading the booklet gave me so much knowledge about HIV and AIDS, and life in general. It encouraged me to change my attitude and behave positively. From reading the Choose Life! booklet, I learned how to abstain and therefore be able to concentrate on my studies. I have also become more loving and caring towards people with HIV and AIDS, and less stigmatizing. I do not abuse drugs and alcohol anymore because I learned that nothing positive comes from them. I have already started taking part in sponsored walks to raise money for orphans whose parents died from AIDS. Above all, I learned how to be assertive so that people cannot make me do anything that I do not want to do. With this positive behavior, I now have time to achieve my goals. I am also free from contracting HIV or falling pregnant. Inilah yang saya alami sebelum membaca buklet Choose Life! (Pilihlah Hidup!). Saya dulu merasa bingung, terhilang dan ketakutan. Membaca buklet Choose Life! membuat saya merasa seperti berbicara dengan seorang teman. Saya merasa bebas dan terbuka. HIV dan AIDS telah menginfeksi seluruh negara di Dunia. Setiap orang ingin terbebas dari penyakit ini karena kita sadar betapa berbahayanya. Membaca buklet memberi saya banyak pengetahuan tentang HIV dan AIDS dan tentang kehidupan secara umum. Itu telah mendorong saya untuk merubah kelakuan saya dan bertindak secara lebih positif. Dari membaca buklet Choose Life!, saya belajar bagaimana mengendalikan ketergantungan alkohol saya dan dengan demikian saya dapat lebih berkonsentrasi pada studi saya. Male, 29 years old Trucker Kerala, India “Hello friends, you all know me…I am a trucker from a remote village of Kerala. I am the third among the five siblings in my family. My parents were daily wageworkers and my father died when I was 8 yrs. My school days were similar to other poor children in India, my attraction in going to school was the free mid day meals, which came to an end when I reached my 9th standard. My mother and the rest were not able to bear the finance for schooling, so I became a free bird at the age of 14 and entered in to the truck industry as a helper boy. As a trucker boy my life changed a lot as I was making enough money and got unlimited freedom and I myself was my master. Years passed, I grew older and you know we have plenty of chances to indulge in sexual activities; my first exposure was at the age of 17 with a sex worker. I soon became a driver. Once I was playing cards with my friends’ and a fellow with a yellow coat (PSI Interpersonal Communicators) approached us. At that moment I never thought that this meeting was going to be a turning point in my life. He asked about many casual and friendly things and we became friends. He initiated discussions about health problems and HIV/AIDS. Even though I heard about HIV/AIDS, I thought that it won’t affect me. My partners were good-looking and healthy; I thought that I was safe. So I always neglect to use condoms. But he explains about the pandemic in detail and it creates some fear in my mind. All of my friends’ sarcastically said that if any one have AIDS here, it could be me. I enjoyed the jokes and decided to talk to that yellow coat guy secretly. The valuable information leads me to the Government Public Heath Lab and I tested non reactive. My counselor informed me that I am in window period and to protect me I have to use condoms with all my partners. More over I have to reduce alcohol and to be careful about the influence of my friends on me. I took a decision to practice it and promised to come back after three months for retesting. I availed VCT services at PSI’s Saadhan clinic this time and tested non-reactive. I was relieved and saved by God’s grace. Really it was a glorious moment in my life. That experience and process touched me deeply and I told this to my close friends. I was happy that I am not infected with HIV/AIDS. I tried to motivate them for testing and many friends followed me and they too tested. Whenever I am free I tried to help yellow coat persons in conducting awareness programs and media shows. Saya anak ke-3 dari 5 bersaudara dalam keluarga saya. Kedua orang tua saya dulu adalah buruh upahan dan ayah saya telah meninggal saat saya berusia 8thn. Hari2 sekolah saya kira2 serupa dengan kebanyakan anak2 miskin di India, yang menarik perhatian saya untuk tetap pergi ke sekolah adalah makan siang gratis, yang berakhir saat saya mencapai level 9 (SMP). Ibuku dan yang lainnya tidak mampu menanggung biaya untuk sekolah, jadi saya menjadi 'burung bebas' pada umur 14thn dan memasuki industri truk sebagai pesuruh. Sebagai pemuda di kalangan supir truk hidupku berubah banyak karena saya menghasilkan cukup uang dan mempunyai kebebasan tak terbatas dengan saya sebagai tuan atas diri sendiri. Tahun2 berlalu, saya tumbuh semakin dewasa dan kau tahu kami disana punya banyak sekali kesempatan untuk terlibat dalam kegiatan sexual; pengalaman pertamaku adalah saat saya berusia 17thn dengan seorang pekerja sex. Saya segera kemudian menjadi seorang supir. Sekali waktu saya sedang bermain kartu dengan teman2 saya dan seorang pria asing yang memakai jaket kuning (PSI komunikator antar personal) mendekati kami. Pada saat itu saya tidak pernah mengira jika pertemuan ini akan menjadi titik balik hidupku. Dia bertanya tentang banyak hal biasa dan ramah lalu kami bersahabat. Pria itu lalu berinisiatif membuka diskusi tentang masalah kesehatan dan HIV/AIDS. Walaupun saya pernah mendengar tentang HIV/AIDS, saya selalu beranggapan itu tak akan pernah menginfeksi saya. Pasangan-pasangan saya berpenampilan cantik dan nampak sehat; saya mengira saya aman. Jadi saya selalu lalai menggunakan kondom. Namun pria ini menjelaskan mengenai penyakit yang mendunia ini secara rinci dan semua itu membangkitkan semacam kengerian di hati saya. Semua teman saya dengan sarkastis mengatakan bahwa jika ada yang sampai terjangkit AIDS disini, itu pastilah saya. saya menikmati humornya dan memutuskan untuk berbicara secara diam-diam dengan pria berjaket kuning itu. Informasi yang berharga itu menuntun saya ke Lab Kesehatan Publik milik pemerintah dan saya menjalani tes. Pembimbingku memberitahu saya bahwa saya dalam masa rawan/tenggang dan untuk melindungi saya, saya harus menggunakan kondom bila berhubungan dengan siapa saja partner tidur saya. Kemudian lebih jauh lagi saya mulai mengurangi konsumsi minuman alkohol dan menjadi berhati-hati pada pengaruh teman2 saya terhadap saya. Saya mengambil keputusan untuk mempraktekkannya dan berjanji untuk selalu kembali setelah 3 bulan untuk test ulang. Saya menjalani VCT service di PSI’s Saadhan clinic kali ini dan terbukti tidak terkontaminasi. Saya sangat lega dan merasa terselamatkan oleh karena Anugrah Tuhan. Sungguh, itu adalah saat paling berharga dalam hidup saya. Pengalaman itu dan prosesnya menyentuh saya sangat dalam dan saya memeberitahukannya pada teman2 dekat saya. Saya sangat gembira bahwa saya tidak terinfeksi HIV/AIDS. Saya mencoba untuk memotivasi mereka menjalani testing dan banyak teman telah mengikuti saran saya menjalani test tersebut. Kapan saja saya ada waktu bebas, saya mencoba menolong orang2 berjaket kuning dalam memperkenalkan program kesadaran dan show media. At one of my mini training sessions, I noticed that one guy was asking many questions related to Sexually Transmitted Infections (STI), the symptoms and consequences. He was born in 1983, and worked as a night shift guard at the market. After mini training he requested to speak to me in private. During our conversation he said he felt sick for two weeks, headache, malaise, and high temperature. I asked him whether he had unsafe sexual contact or shared a syringe with someone. He said that he practices sex without a condom. I proposed to him to have an anonymous test and suggested going there together. At the same day we went for the test. In three days we received the results and our concerns were confirmed. He was in the second stage of syphilis. It was very hard for him to realize that he was infected and had syphilis. Currently he takes the full course of treatment. Had we not reached him when we did, it would have been very difficult to treat him later in the course of the infection. Thanks to our organization we managed to transfer the information necessary for him in time and by this saved his future.”
